Ceramic & Polymer Film Dielectric Breakdown Testing
Technical Specifications & Test Capabilities
| Parameter / Metric | Specification Range & Accuracy | Operational Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DC Breakdown Voltage | 0 to 50 kV (Ramp rate ≤ 1000 V/s) | Programmable ramp and step-stress modes |
| AC Breakdown Voltage | 0 to 10 kV (50/60 Hz) | High-voltage transformer with rapid arc cut-off |
| Testing Medium & Temp | High-dielectric silicone oil, RT to 180°C | Eliminates air surface flashover |
| Trip Current Sensitivity | Adjustable from 0.1 mA to 10 mA | Sub-millisecond arc detection |
Specimen Geometry & Preparation Guide
| Material Form | Recommended Dimensions | Dimensional Limits | Electrode & Poling Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dielectric Thin Films | Symmetric sputtered electrodes Ø3–5 mm | Film area significantly larger than electrode | Prevents edge creepage flashover across borders |
| Electronic Ceramic Substrates | Diameter 35 ± 5 mm, thickness 1 ± 0.1 mm | Center printed electrode Ø8 ± 0.2 mm | Guards against boundary field concentration |
Testing Function
Dielectric breakdown strength (Eb) establishes the ultimate operating voltage limit and reliability safety margin for electrical insulating ceramics, power capacitor films, and high-voltage packaging substrates. Submerged in high-grade dielectric silicone oil up to 180°C, our system applies controlled voltage ramps up to 50 kV DC or 10 kV AC until puncture, capturing precise trip voltage, current surge transients, and statistical Weibull distributions.
Testing Conditions
Primary Instruments: VBT-50KV (DC), AC10KV System
