🔬 The Scientific Challenge: Sealing Small Quartz Tubes with Organic Solutions

Preparing air-sensitive organic compounds and persistent free radicals for Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) analysis requires defect-free, hermetic vacuum encapsulation. Atmospheric oxygen is paramagnetic and causes intense spectral line broadening, which masks the subtle hyperfine splitting structures vital to radical characterization.

However, encapsulating organic compounds in quartz tubes presents distinct technical challenges compared to standard inorganic solid-state synthesis:

  • Quartz Tube Geometry & Dimensions: EPR spectrometers require narrow-bore quartz tubes with outer diameters (OD) of 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm, or 5 mm, lengths of 150 mm or 250 mm, and wall thicknesses between 0.5 mm and 0.8 mm. 2. Dedicated Mechanical Pump Configuration (Base Vacuum: 10 Pa)
